Lagos fortifies MMIA borders as deadly East and Central Africa Ebola outbreak escalates

According to VANGUARD, Lagos State has intensified public health surveillance and traveler screening at MMIA to safeguard Nigeria’s busiest international gateway against the evolving Ebola outbreak in Central and East Africa.

The Lagos State Government has stepped up disease surveillance and biosecurity measures at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) following an Ebola resurgence in Central and East Africa. Leading a high-level inspection team on Sunday, Health Commissioner Prof. Akin Abayomi proposed isolating high-risk arrivals from other travelers to secure the nation’s primary aviation gateway without gridlocking terminal operations.

MMIA processes roughly 70 percent of Nigeria’s international air traffic, making it the most vulnerable entry point for cross-border infections. To strengthen detection and rapid isolation protocols, airport officials are deploying touchless sanitizers, tracking thermal data, and setting up dedicated arrival channels.

Emphasizing the balance between border defense and travel efficiency, Abayomi remarked: “Our objective is to create a bottleneck for the virus, not for passengers.” Although Nigeria has no confirmed cases, the NCDC urges maximum vigilance as the regional outbreak spreads.
