Kwankwaso backs NDC’s decision to zone 2027 presidential ticket to south

Former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has endorsed the Nigeria Democratic Congress’s decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, as he and Peter Obi formally joined the party at its national convention in Abuja.

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso on Saturday threw his weight behind the Nigeria Democratic Congress’s decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, describing the move as consistent with the party’s power-sharing agreement.

Speaking at the NDC national convention in Abuja, Kwankwaso said: “I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket to the South so that the region can complete its eight years. This is in line with the zoning process and party agreement.”

The resolution was formally adopted during the convention following a motion by Anambra lawmaker Afam Victor Ogene. NDC National Chairman Moses Cleopas confirmed the North would reclaim the ticket in 2031.

The zoning arrangement is expected to boost the presidential prospects of Peter Obi and other southern aspirants. Both Obi and Kwankwaso formally joined the NDC at the convention, urging members to avoid internal disputes and focus on unseating President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
