Former President Goodluck Jonathan is reportedly set to join the 2027 presidential race, amid indications he may align with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is likely to join the 2027 presidential race on Friday, according to sources familiar with the development. One of the sources told SaharaReporters that the former president had already hinted at re-entering the contest and could formally make the move as early as Friday. Political observers have speculated that Jonathan may align with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), although this had not been independently verified at the time of filing the report. Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso recently joined the NDC after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Jonathan had earlier hinted at the possibility of returning to the race while addressing a group of youths who appealed to him to contest in 2027. Responding to the calls, he cautioned that the presidency was a serious undertaking. “Presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you, and I’ll consult widely. But the most important thing is in Nigeria, that the young people will have hope,” Jonathan said. He also urged Nigerian youths to remain patriotic, warning against actions capable of undermining national unity and development. “I urge you to continue to be patriotic to the country. It’s only patriotic citizens that build their nations. Unpatriotic citizens will destroy their nation, take the money to anywhere to enjoy their life,” he said.
The former president further stressed the need for peaceful coexistence and credible elections, insisting that competent citizens would continue to avoid politics if the electoral process lacked integrity. “So as young people, because most of you here, more than 80% of you are very young people. I don’t even know how old some of you were when I was the president. But the key thing is peace in this country, and you continue to advocate for that,” he said. “And you continue to advocate for peaceful and credible elections in the country. Because if we don’t have peaceful and credible elections, most good citizens will not want to bother to get involved in politics.” Jonathan also encouraged youths to participate actively in elections by obtaining their voter cards and exercising their voting rights.
