How we uncovered plot to overthrow Tinubu, Army tells court

The Nigerian Army has told a Federal High Court that it uncovered an alleged coup plot against President Tinubu, with six suspects facing charges linked to treason, terrorism, and financial support for the conspiracy.

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday told the Federal High Court in Abuja that a plot to overthrow the administration of Bola Tinubu through a coup d’état was uncovered. A masked witness from the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police testified against six suspects, including retired Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana and others, alleging their involvement in the conspiracy.

The prosecution said investigations began after intelligence received by the Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, pointed to a planned regime change led by Colonel Mohammed Alhassan Ma’aji and accomplices. Evidence presented in court included a recovered phone and documents allegedly detailing operational plans, targets, and financial links between the suspects and key figures, including former Bayelsa governor Timipre Sylva, who is reportedly at large.

Further testimony linked large financial transactions and meetings in Abuja to the alleged plot, with support from records obtained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik admitted several exhibits and granted the government’s request to shield witness identities due to security concerns. The defendants, who pleaded not guilty to charges including treason and terrorism, remain in DSS custody as the case continues on May 4 and 5.
