Nigeria’s Federal Government has launched FreeTV, a free digital television platform giving Nigerians access to over 100 channels — no subscription required.
Unveiled on June 17 as part of the country’s Digital Switch-Over programme, the service covers news, sports, movies, music, kids’ content and indigenous language channels. Crucially, viewers don’t need a new TV set — existing sets with compatible DVB-T2 or DVB-S2 decoders will do the job. Coverage stretches beyond cities into rural and underserved communities via satellite, terrestrial transmission, and a dedicated mobile app.
The National Broadcasting Commission says the platform will also boost local content production and create jobs across the creative industry. Nigeria’s final analogue switch-off remains scheduled for December 31, 2028, the Guardian reports.
