Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has been charged by the Federal Government with unlawfully intercepting the communications of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, in a three-count suit filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The Federal Government, through the Department of State Services (DSS), has arraigned Nasir El-Rufai on three counts, alleging that he unlawfully intercepted the phone communications of the Nuhu Ribadu. The suit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, claims that El-Rufai, who also served as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, committed the offence alongside individuals who are currently at large. FG told the court that the defendant had, on February 3, while appearing on Arise TV’s Prime Time program, admitted his complicity in the alleged crime.
El-Rufai was specifically accused of violating section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act 2024. In the second count, the former governor, described as a leading member of a coalition of opposition politicians dissatisfied with Bola Tinubu’s administration, was said to have known that someone unlawfully intercepted the NSA’s communications but failed to report the matter to relevant security agencies.
The charges, lodged amidst a tense political atmosphere, underscore the Federal Government’s assertion that violations of national cyber and security laws will be met with prosecution, regardless of political stature.
