An Islamic cleric and a presidential villa worker gave conflicting but distancing accounts of their roles in the alleged plot to overthrow President Tinubu.
An Islamic cleric, Kassim Goni, has told a federal high court in Abuja that N10 million he received from Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji was strictly for prayers and charitable purposes. A video recording of his statement was played in court during the ongoing trial of six defendants accused of plotting to overthrow President Tinubu.
In a separate recording, defendant Zekeri Umoru described receiving a bag containing N8.8 million in cash from Ma’aji. He said he only learned the true purpose when a co-defendant told him Ma’aji wanted to “sanitise the government.” Umoru insisted his involvement was unintentional. The trial continues May 11 to 13.
