Former president Olusegun Obasanjo urged Nigerians to forgive past ethnic divisions and accept that the Civil War should never have occurred.
According to Peoples Gazette, former president Olusegun Obasanjo has urged Nigerians to abandon lingering bitterness from the Civil War and ethnic conflicts. Speaking on the Before Tomorrow Comes Podcast, he described the 1967–1970 war as a tragedy that “should not have happened.” He said, “One of the tragedies of this country will be the circumstances that led to the civil war and the civil war itself.”
Obasanjo called for forgiveness among ethnic groups, warning against stereotyping Yorubas, Igbos or Fulanis based on past actions. Recalling the coup era, he revealed that Hassan Katsina transferred him from Kaduna to Maiduguri for safety, possibly saving his life. He added that Nigerians must accept past mistakes, forgive one another and focus on national unity and progress together.
