Borno State has issued an urgent public health advisory following a rampant cholera outbreak that killed 37 villagers and infected over 3,000 people across 138 communities.
The Borno State Government has raised an alarm over a severe cholera outbreak that has infected more than 3,000 people and claimed 37 lives across seven local government areas during May. Dr. Saleh Abba-Kaza, Executive Secretary of the Borno State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency, revealed Saturday that the outbreak has expanded rapidly, spreading to 36 wards and over 138 communities.
The state’s healthcare system faces intense pressure, with the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council acting as the epicenter with over 2,000 cases, followed by Jere LGA with more than 1,000 cases. Health officials attribute the spike to poor water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions, worsened by ongoing rains washing contaminants into residential areas.
Urging immediate community vigilance and public cooperation, Abba-Kaza stated: “Together, we can protect our communities and stop the spread of cholera. The cooperation of all residents is essential at this critical time.”
