Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has taken a swipe at some of Nigeria’s leading opposition figures, describing Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar as “office seekers” rather than true opposition leaders, Vanguard reports.
Speaking on Trust TV’s Daily Politics, Baba-Ahmed argued that genuine opposition leadership goes beyond social media reactions and requires standing physically with citizens facing hardship and insecurity.
Referencing recent bomb attacks in Borno State, he questioned why opposition leaders had not visited Maiduguri to show solidarity with affected communities. According to him, President Bola Tinubu and the late Muhammadu Buhari did exactly that during the height of the insurgency years ago.
“It’s not enough that they are tweeting about it,” he said, insisting that practical action matters more than online commentary.
Baba-Ahmed, however, singled out former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi for praise, describing him as an outstanding political figure.
He also hinted at past disagreements with Obi over political decisions, revealing that he had advised the former Anambra governor differently at key moments.
