The Court of Appeal upheld Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension by the Senate but overturned the contempt ruling and N5m fine against her.
The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal on Monday affirmed the Senate’s suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, ruling that the red chamber acted within its powers. In a unanimous decision, the court held that the suspension did not violate her parliamentary privileges or constitutional rights.
However, the appellate court set aside the contempt proceedings and N5m fine imposed over a satirical apology to Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Justice A. B. Muhammed ruled that Akpoti-Uduaghan was lawfully denied the floor for not occupying her officially allotted seat during plenary.
