Governor Dauda Lawal’s defection from the PDP to the APC has reduced opposition-controlled states in Nigeria to five while strengthening the ruling party’s nationwide dominance.
The number of opposition-controlled states in Nigeria has dropped to five after Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). With the move, the APC now controls 32 states nationwide.
In a statement, the Zamfara government said the decision followed consultations with stakeholders and was taken in the “overriding interest of stability, progress and the sustainable development” of the state.
The government cited prolonged internal crises and leadership disagreements within the PDP as reasons for the defection, noting the issues created distractions to governance.
Meanwhile, Nasarawa politician David Ombugadu also rejoined the APC after eight years in opposition, admitting: “I spent eight years on the other side, policing the policy of my elder brother… anything that is good, we paint it black.”
