Governor Seyi Makinde has vowed he would sacrifice himself to secure the release of 46 pupils and teachers abducted in Oyo State, declaring “Oyo State is not Chibok” while addressing protesters led by activist VeryDarkMan.
Governor Seyi Makinde just made it personal.
Addressing protesters led by social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, at his Ikolaba residence in Ibadan on Tuesday, the Oyo governor made an emotional vow over the 46 pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government on May 15, according to Sahara Reporters.
“Let me make it very, very clear, Oyo State is not Chibok and we will not be Chibok,” Makinde declared.
He revealed security forces have already paid a heavy price in the rescue effort: “We have lost men, even soldiers and officers, and I can confirm to you that a lieutenant in the Nigerian Army was killed a few days ago.”
Then came the line that’s going viral. Asked if he’d give his own life for the children’s freedom, Makinde didn’t flinch: “If you ask me, can I sacrifice myself for those children to come out? I will do it. I have lived a good life, I’m almost 60 and it doesn’t matter. Our children will never be in the same situation as Chibok children.”
He acknowledged the painstaking caution behind the rescue mission, noting one teacher has already been killed, and that “if we get to the point that certain people have to be sacrificed, including myself, we will do it.”
Makinde also voiced solidarity with the protesters: “If I am not in government, I will be you; I’ll be protesting with you.”
