Love is about to get very expensive in Kano. The Punch reports that the Kano State Government has set aside N1.5 billion for a mass wedding programme covering 3,000 couples. Hisbah Commander-General Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa disclosed this on Monday, revealing that the funds will cover furniture, food, dowry, clothing materials and a N100,000 startup capital for each bride. Over 5,000 people applied but only 3,000 will make the cut after mandatory medical screening for HIV, hepatitis, pregnancy and genotype compatibility. Screening, which began May 8, covers couples from 24 of Kano’s 44 local government areas. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is expected to announce the wedding date soon.
