A kidnap attempt targeting Chinese expatriates at a Mowe dredging site in Ogun State ended in tragedy, with a soldier and four hostages killed during a fierce gun battle with suspected kidnappers.
According to Peoples Gazette, citing the Nigerian Army, security operatives responded to a distress call from the dredging site in Magbon, Mowe, when they came under attack from armed gunmen.
The army said one suspected kidnapper was killed during the exchange, but the attackers fled into nearby forests, taking five hostages as human shields. Four of the captives were later killed before the gunmen escaped through a river channel by boat.
One soldier lost his life, while another soldier and two police officers sustained gunshot injuries. Security agencies have since intensified patrols across the area as efforts continue to track down the attackers.
