Ondo coastal community faces extinction as ocean threatens home, residents fault government inaction

Ayetoro, a historic coastal community in Ondo State, is facing a growing environmental crisis as relentless ocean surges continue to swallow homes, infrastructure and cultural landmarks.

According to SaharaReporters, residents and community stakeholders say the Atlantic Ocean is steadily erasing the Ilaje settlement, raising fears that the town could disappear entirely without urgent intervention.

Critics accused successive governments of neglecting the community despite years of warnings and available resources for shoreline protection projects. Former resident Olusegun Aiyerin described the situation as a failure of political will, noting that engineering solutions used to protect Lagos’ coastline could be replicated in Ayetoro.

The crisis has sparked renewed calls for immediate action, with residents warning that every delay brings the community closer to extinction and the loss of its history, identity and livelihoods.
