Court adjourns eligibility suit against Jonathan to May 11 for hearing

A Federal High Court in Abuja adjourned a suit challenging former President Goodluck Jonathan’s eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election until May 11, 2026.

According to AIT, a Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned a suit seeking to stop former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election until May 11, 2026. Justice Peter Lifu granted the adjournment after plaintiff’s counsel, Ndubuisi Ukpai, requested time to respond to a preliminary objection filed by Jonathan’s legal team.

Jonathan’s lawyer, Chris Uche, SAN, argued that similar matters had already been decided by courts, questioning why the issue persists. The plaintiff, Johnmary Jideobi, asked the court to determine “whether in view of the combined provisions of sections 1(1), (2) and (3) and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution, the 1st defendant is eligible” to contest again. Jideobi argued Jonathan had exhausted the constitutional limit after completing Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s tenure and serving another full term after the 2011 election.
