2027: Why opposition parties should rethink zoning presidency to South – Atiku

Former vice president Atiku Abubakar urged opposition parties to reconsider zoning the 2027 presidential ticket to the South, arguing it could weaken their chances against President Bola Tinubu.

According to Daily Post Nigeria, former vice president Atiku Abubakar has urged opposition parties to reconsider zoning the 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria. In a statement issued by his spokesman, Olusola Sanni, Atiku argued that defeating an incumbent Southern president with another Southern candidate would be politically difficult. “No incumbent president has ever been defeated by an opposition challenger from the same geopolitical bloc,” the statement said.

He added that politics should focus on strategy and coalition-building rather than sentiment. Atiku also questioned arguments supporting southern zoning, noting that the South would have held presidential power longer than the North by 2027. While supporting the Southeast’s presidential ambition, he warned against “transactional political bargaining.” He urged opposition parties to build a strong national coalition capable of unseating President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
