Dangote is considering building a multibillion-dollar oil refinery in Kenya to boost East Africa’s fuel production capacity.
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, is considering Kenya as the location for a 650,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery expected to cost between $15 billion and $17 billion. Speaking to the Financial Times, Dangote said, “I’m leaning more towards Mombasa because Mombasa has a much larger, deeper port.” The project could replicate the scale of his Nigerian refinery and strengthen East Africa’s fuel supply chain.
Kenyan President William Ruto had earlier revealed regional talks on a joint refinery project in Tanzania’s Tanga port. Dangote, however, argued that Kenya offers a stronger market, saying, “Kenyans consume more. It’s a bigger economy.” He added, “The ball is in the hands of President Ruto.” East Africa currently relies heavily on imported refined petroleum products.
