Nigeria listed as US targets foreign-born citizens in fraud crackdown

The Trump administration has intensified efforts to revoke U.S. citizenship from some foreign-born Americans, including Nigerians, over alleged fraud, crimes and terrorism links.

The Trump administration on Friday expanded its denaturalization campaign, targeting foreign-born American citizens accused of fraud, crimes and terrorism-related offences, with Nigeria among affected countries.

The U.S. Justice Department filed cases against about a dozen naturalized citizens from countries including Nigeria, China, Kenya, Somalia and India, seeking to revoke their citizenship.

Officials alleged that some suspects committed immigration fraud, used false identities, entered sham marriages or had links to terrorist organisations.

Among those targeted are a Moroccan-born man accused of al Qaeda ties, a Somali immigrant linked to al Shabaab and a former Gambian police officer accused of war crimes.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the crackdown, saying, “We should disincentivize people from committing fraud when they’re going to become a citizen of this great country.”

He added that lawful citizens who obtained citizenship legally had “nothing to worry about.”
