The Senate descended into prolonged disorder after Akpabio and Oshiomhole clashed over procedural rules, with the Senate President threatening to invoke disciplinary measures against the Edo North senator.
The Nigerian Senate was thrown into disorder for over 15 minutes on Wednesday following a fiery confrontation between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Adams Oshiomhole over the interpretation of amended Standing Rules.
The clash erupted after Oshiomhole repeatedly raised a point of order during a stage of proceedings where such interruptions are prohibited under the 2023 Standing Rules. Despite warnings from Akpabio and Chief Whip Senator Tahir Monguno, Oshiomhole persisted.
“If you become unruly, we will use the rules to take you out of the Senate,” Akpabio warned. The dispute is linked to Tuesday’s amendment restricting principal office contests to senators who have served at least two consecutive terms.
