‘What did I do to the police?’–mother of slain Delta man alleges police killed another son

The family of Mene Ogidi has demanded justice after he was allegedly extrajudicially killed by police in Effurun, as authorities confirm the dismissal of the officers involved.

The family of Mene Ogidi, a 28-year-old man allegedly killed by officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Effurun, has called for justice, describing the incident as part of a disturbing pattern. Speaking in an emotional interview, Ogidi’s mother and elder sister said he had left home to pick up a waybill for a friend but never returned alive.

The police had earlier announced the dismissal of the officer identified as Nuhu Usman and others involved in the shooting following an internal investigation. According to Force Public Relations Officer Anthony Okon Placid, the dismissed officers would be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in the killing.

However, the family said the action had done little to ease their grief, alleging a history of similar incidents. “The one they killed before is younger to this one (Ogidi). What did I do to the police? From the video shown to me, I heard my son begging them it was someone who sent him to help him pick the waybill,” his mother said. His sister added, “He is my immediate younger brother. He was my everything… The day he was killed, when he was leaving the house, he told me he wanted to collect a waybill. That his friend in Sapele asked him to help him pick a waybill.”
