‘I looked him straight in the eye’ — Aisha Yesufu issues strong warning to Peter Obi over presidency plans

Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has vowed to actively oppose Peter Obi in the future if he reneges on his pledge to serve only a single four-year term should he win the 2027 presidential election.

Prominent socio-political activist and key ally of the Labour Party, Aisha Yesufu, has issued a stern warning to Peter Obi, stating she will lead the opposition against him if he seeks a second term should he be elected President in 2027. Speaking during a recent interview with Arise TV on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, Yesufu revealed that her support for the former Anambra State Governor is contingent upon a specific, binding promise to serve only four years. She emphasized that political integrity is a non-negotiable requirement for her continued alliance, noting that she sought personal confirmation from Obi to ensure his vision for Nigeria aligns with a rapid, single-term reform agenda. “I am someone whose words mean a lot to me. Even if I have to lose my life on it, I keep to my words,” she asserted.

Yesufu recounted a private meeting held with Obi following the 2023 presidential election, during which she demanded a clear commitment regarding his tenure ambitions. According to the activist, she looked the Labour Party leader “in the eye” to ask for his word on the matter to avoid the “sit-tight” syndrome prevalent in African politics. “I asked him, are you going to do only one term? And he said, ‘Aisha, I’ve told you before, I will do only one term, so you can do so much, you can achieve so much within that one term,’” Yesufu said. She argued that this focused approach is necessary to implement the radical changes Nigeria requires without the distractions of a re-election campaign.

While Yesufu acknowledged that this assurance strengthened her confidence in Obi’s 2027 bid, she made it clear that her loyalty lies with the principle of accountability rather than the individual. She warned that any attempt to extend his stay beyond 2031 would result in a total breakdown of their political partnership. “After the 2023 election, I went to Mr Peter Obi, and I looked him in the eye, and I said, Sir, I need your word on this,” she reiterated, highlighting that she would not hesitate to mobilize against him if his actions contradict his private and public pledges. As of Tuesday, the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) has not issued a formal response to Yesufu’s televised ultimatum.
