Traders reopened Onitsha markets following IPOB’s suspension of the sit-at-home order, but low customer turnout and lingering fears dampened business activities.
Commercial activities resumed in Onitsha on Monday after the Indigenous People of Biafra ended the weekly sit-at-home order across the South-East. About 70 percent of traders reopened shops at Onitsha Main Market and surrounding markets, though customer turnout remained low, especially from outside Anambra State, with many major roads still quiet.
Some traders sent apprentices, known as Umu Boi, amid fears of possible attacks. “I didn’t go to the market because we are still afraid, but my boys went. Customers from within and outside the state are not coming,” Justin Igwe said. Okwudili Okoye added, “Traders opened their shops, but we have no customers… We need ways to encourage customers to return on Mondays.”
