Nigeria’s delayed ambassadorial appointments risk rejection by host countries due to tenure concerns ahead of the 2027 elections.
Storms may be brewing for several of President Bola Tinubu’s ambassadorial nominees as host countries may decline to grant agrément due to concerns over the short remaining tenure of the administration, findings by Sunday PUNCH have shown. Senior officials disclosed that some countries require ambassadors to serve a minimum of one to two years, a condition complicated by Nigeria’s 2027 election timeline and the May 2027 end of Tinubu’s first term.
A senior foreign service official said, “The problem we have… is that most countries… will tell you that if an ambassador has less than one year or two, they may have issues.” With delayed nominations, confirmation processes, mandatory retreats and background checks, some envoys may not resume duty until late 2026, leaving limited time to serve before elections, officials warned.
