Mourinho dismissed by Fenerbahce after playoff defeat

Fenerbahce have sacked Jose Mourinho after their Champions League playoff defeat to Benfica, ending his turbulent 14-month tenure in Istanbul.

Fenerbahce have dismissed Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho just two days after their Champions League elimination, the Turkish club announced on Friday.

In a statement, the club said: “We have parted ways with Jose Mourinho, who served as head coach of our professional A team since the 2024-2025 season. We thank him for his efforts for our team and wish him success in his future career.”

Mourinho, who took charge in June 2024, guided the Istanbul side to a second-place league finish last season, behind arch-rivals Galatasaray, but failed to end their long domestic title drought. Their latest setback came midweek with a playoff defeat to Benfica, ending their hopes of Champions League football.

The 62-year-old’s turbulent spell in Turkey was also marked by controversies. He was fined for remarks against referees deemed “contrary to sporting ethics” and in April clashed physically with Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk during a heated derby cup tie.
