A homeless, middle-aged woman died after becoming trapped in a clothing donation drop box in Plantation, Florida, about 28 miles north of Miami, authorities said.
The Plantation Police Department stated on social media that officers arrived Friday morning to find the woman already deceased. The incident is being treated as accidental but remains under investigation.
According to WSVN, the woman suffocated after getting stuck in the box.
“It’s super sad. Just trying to get some fresh clothes. … I’ve dropped clothes off in that bin, and the opening is super small. It’s kind of like at the post office when you put a package in. I can’t imagine someone trying to get into there,” an unnamed donor told WFOR-TV.
Police are withholding the woman’s identity pending notification of her next of kin.
