France condemns Burkina Faso’s break in ties, warns of reciprocal measures

France has condemned Burkina Faso’s decision to unilaterally cut diplomatic relations as “hostile and baseless,” warning that retaliatory measures are under consideration.

Paris is hitting back at Ouagadougou. According to Sahara Reporters, France’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs condemned Burkina Faso’s decision to sever diplomatic relations, calling it “hostile and baseless” and warning that retaliatory measures are under consideration.

In a statement, France said it regretted the decision, describing it as reflecting a “worrying drift” in the conduct of Burkina Faso’s military authorities. Paris stressed it remained committed to the Burkinabe people, citing the longstanding relationship between both nations, while urging French citizens in the country to exercise increased vigilance.

The fallout marks another escalation in strained ties between France and military-led West African governments. Burkina Faso’s junta had earlier accused France of neo-colonial ambitions and support for subversive networks and terrorists, Sahara Reporters reported.
