Nigeria achieved its strongest showing yet in the 2026 Times Higher Education rankings, with 24 universities earning places on the prestigious list.
Nigeria has posted its best-ever showing in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings and Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings, with 24 universities making the list. According to a report by The Nation, the feat makes Nigeria the most represented country in Sub-Saharan Africa, up from 21 institutions in both the 2024 and 2025 editions.
The University of Ibadan led the pack, followed by the University of Lagos and Bayero University Kano. Other top performers include:
- Covenant University
- Landmark University
- Ahmadu Bello University
- Federal University of Technology, Minna
- University of Ilorin
- Obafemi Awolowo University
- University of Benin
- University of Calabar
- University of Port Harcourt
The list comprises 17 federal, four state and three private universities, The Nation reports.
