36 names, 36 families:Full list of Lassa school abductees

Daily Trust has obtained a verified register of 36 students — 11 male and 25 female — abducted by suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents who stormed Government Day Secondary School Lassa in Borno State on Monday morning, killing one teacher who refused to follow them.

Thirty-six names. Thirty-six families shattered. And a classroom that will sit empty until they come home.

Daily Trust has obtained a verified register of students abducted during Monday morning’s terror raid on Government Day Secondary School Lassa, in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State — compiled by school authorities and authenticated by Hon Jagila Jabula, Councillor representing Lassa Ward.

Suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province insurgents struck at approximately 8:30am, descending on the school while students were in session. One teacher who refused to follow the attackers was shot dead on the spot. Another sustained injuries and was hospitalised.

Of the 36 abducted students, 25 are female and 11 are male. By class, one is an SS3 student, 17 are from SS2 and 18 are SS1 students — teenagers, most of them, who came to school Monday morning for an ordinary day of learning.

“The list was compiled by the school authorities with the help of the parents of the missing students,” Councillor Jabula confirmed to Daily Trust.

The timing and geography of the attack is deeply alarming. Lassa village sits just 20 kilometres from Mussa community, where 42 pupils of Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School were abducted on May 15 — making this the second mass school abduction in the same tight corridor of Borno State within weeks.

The pattern is unmistakable and devastating. Schools are being deliberately targeted. Students — children — are being seized as pawns, bargaining chips or recruits by an insurgency the Nigerian military has repeatedly claimed is “largely defeated.”

Tell that to the parents of 36 students who sent their children to class on Monday and are still waiting for them to come home.

Their names are now on a list. They deserve to be on a school roll instead.
