First Lady Remi Tinubu says she won’t be deterred by online criticism over her advice urging unemployed women to consider small businesses like akara trading.
Akara Backlash
Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has responded to backlash over her advice urging unemployed women to explore small-scale trades, including frying and selling akara.
According to Daily Post, the remarks triggered a wave of criticism on social media, with some young Nigerians accusing her of being out of touch with the country’s economic struggles.
Speaking in Jigawa State on Monday, Tinubu said the criticism wouldn’t stop her office from backing grassroots entrepreneurs, noting the initiative extends beyond akara sellers to tomato, maize, vegetable and other petty traders.
“I know the beneficiaries appreciate it, and we’re not intimidated by the wrong reports,” she said.
Her office, she added, would continue supporting small-scale traders and vulnerable Nigerians.
