Yoruba traditional rulers to invoke gods against bandits over wave of abductions

Yoruba traditional rulers are considering invoking ancestral deities and other indigenous spiritual measures to tackle banditry, kidnapping and violent crimes across the South-West.

According to Saturday PUNCH, the move follows the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi’s call for monarchs to ncestral means alongside government efforts to comba

at insecurity.

Several monarchs said the region cannot rely only on federal security agencies, especially as over 40 pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oyo State remain in captivity.

Traditionalists also backed the move, saying Yoruba spiritual systems could help protect communities and borders.

However, some monarchs urged caution, insisting any traditional intervention must stay within the law, respect human rights and complement conventional security operations.
