The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued an important advisory warning that visa applicants, including Nigerians, remain subject to continuous security screening even after their visas have been approved and issued.
In a statement published on its official X handle on Monday, the mission clarified that security vetting applies to all applicants regardless of visa type or geographical location, running from the moment of application through the entire validity period of any issued visa.
“Security vetting runs from the time of each application, through adjudication of the visa, and afterwards during the validity period of every issued visa, to ensure the individual remains eligible to travel to the United States,” the statement confirmed.
The multi-layered screening process evaluates applicants’ backgrounds, criminal histories, terrorism risks and other security concerns, meaning visa approval does not guarantee uninterrupted travel eligibility.
The advisory serves as a significant reminder to Nigerian travelers that compliance with US immigration and security requirements must be maintained consistently throughout the entire visa lifecycle.
With continuous vetting now confirmed, should Nigerian visa holders be more cautious about their online activity and personal conduct and does this level of surveillance go too far?
