UI students shut down academic activities on Wednesday to protest a 48-hour electricity blackout and water shortage connected to an ongoing non-teaching staff strike.
Undergraduate students at the University of Ibadan disrupted academic activities on Wednesday, staging a protest over a prolonged electricity outage and acute water shortage that has gripped the campus since Sunday.
Carrying buckets and chanting “No water, no class,” students marched into lecture halls demanding the suspension of lectures and tests until basic utilities were restored. Earlier assurances from the Dean of Student Affairs that power would return overnight went unfulfilled.
“We’ve not had water and light since Sunday, yet they expect us to attend tests and classes,” one student said. The crisis is linked to an ongoing strike by non-teaching university staff unions that began May 4, disrupting essential campus services including the university health center.
