Sowore criticised police arrests over a false Elumelu divorce report, raising concerns about free speech.
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has criticised the Nigeria Police Force for arresting three individuals over alleged defamatory claims involving Tony Elumelu. In a Facebook post, Sowore argued that reporting on a public figure’s marital status is not a criminal offence.
“We must continue to remind the Nigerian Nigeria Police Force… that it is not a criminal offense warranting arrest or detention,” he said, demanding the immediate release of those detained.
The development followed a statement by United Bank for Africa describing the divorce claim as “fabricated, reckless, and malicious.” The bank confirmed arrests had been made and warned against further dissemination.
The incident has reignited debate over free speech, defamation laws, and police involvement in online disputes.
