Six-year term? Nigeria’s problems run deeper than a calendar fix

The Coalition of United Political Parties and the Nigerian Political Science Association have flatly rejected proposals for a six-year single presidential term, warning it is unnecessary, unworkable and potentially a cover for tenure elongation

SIX YEARS WON’T FIX NIGERIA — CRITICS

Nigeria’s politicians want more time in office. Critics say that’s precisely the problem.

Following Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele’s announcement of a bill proposing a single six-year term for presidents and governors, two prominent groups have pushed back hard, per Sunday Punch.

CUPP spokesperson Mark Adebayo didn’t mince words: “If you are going to base it on the time factor, you can’t solve all the challenges of this country even if it is a 10-year term. It is unnecessary. It is undesirable. It is not the solution to anything.”

He also raised a darker concern — that the proposal could mask a hidden tenure elongation agenda.

Former NPSA President Prof. Hassan Saliu acknowledged some merits, including reduced election costs, but warned: “Whether you give them six years, seven years or 10 years, will their attitude change?”

Both men agree on one thing: Nigeria’s problem isn’t time — it’s character.
