President Bola Tinubu reportedly directed former Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to retire after discovering alleged non-remittance of operational funds to state commands amid rising insecurity.
Shocking revelations have emerged over the circumstances surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s directive for former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to proceed on retirement. Sources disclosed that the decision followed the discovery that monthly allocations meant for administrative, operational and logistical needs of some state police commands were allegedly not remitted for several months. Vanguard gathered that amid rising kidnappings and attacks across states, the President had sought explanations and was informed that funds had been provided to boost police capacity and improve response to insecurity.
A source said, “On several occasions, former IGP Egbetokun had reassured the President that perpetrators of dastardly criminal acts would be arrested provided certain operational requirements were in place. The President would make funds available for those purposes, yet a few days later, more deadly attacks or incidents of kidnapping by terrorists would occur to the embarrassment of the President. The incidents in Kaduna, Niger, Kwara, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Adamawa were not taken lightly by the President.” It was further gathered that discreet inquiries made to state Commissioners of Police revealed that some commands had not received monthly allocations for as long as six to seven months, a development said to have hampered their operations.
Another source stated, “There is no way non-remittance of monthly allocations will not affect running of the police commands, even though the money would not be enough.” The alleged anomaly, particularly claims that funds were available but not disbursed, reportedly angered the President and influenced his directive for Egbetokun’s exit. Sources also cited the removal of Tunji Disu from his position as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Special Protection Force/Unit as another issue that displeased the President, especially following reported internal disagreements over the implementation of directives on the withdrawal of police officers from VIP protection.
