Senegal has nominated retired air force general and current Armed Forces Minister Birame Diop as its candidate for President of the ECOWAS Commission, according to Peoples Gazette. The announcement was made by Senegal’s foreign ministry, with President Bassirou Faye backing his candidacy ahead of the July 2026 ECOWAS summit.
Diop, a former Chief of Air Staff and seasoned security expert, is being presented as a strong contender with deep experience in defence, governance, and regional integration. If confirmed, he would take over leadership of the West African bloc at a critical time marked by political, economic, and security challenges across the region.
