The war of words inside the African Democratic Congress (ADC) just got hotter.
Former Vice President and ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has hit back at former SGF Babachir Lawal over allegations that the party’s presidential primary was rigged in his favour, Peoples Gazette reports.
Through his spokesman, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku dismissed the claims as baseless, insisting that Babachir failed to provide any evidence to support the accusation. He argued that the same ADC primary process Babachir now condemns also produced his cousin, Omar Suleiman, as the party’s governorship candidate in Adamawa State.
Atiku’s camp accused Babachir of “selective outrage,” questioning why the process was acceptable when it favoured a family member but suddenly became “rigged” when it produced a presidential candidate he did not support.
The response follows Babachir’s resignation from the ADC, where he alleged that the presidential primary was manipulated in Atiku’s favour. Atiku, however, maintained that the exercise reflected the will of party members nationwide and said democracy guarantees participation, not victory.
