The House of Representatives is considering a bill sponsored by lawmaker Peter Uzokwe that would mandate drug tests for truck drivers every six months in a bid to curb tanker and trailer accidents linked to substance abuse.

Nigeria’s truckers could soon face regular drug screening. According to The Guardian, a bill under consideration by the House of Representatives seeks to mandate drug tests for truck drivers every six months, aimed at reducing tanker and trailer accidents on Nigerian roads.
Sponsoring lawmaker Peter Uzokwe, representing Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo Federal Constituency, said substance abuse remains a major factor behind heavy-duty vehicle crashes, speaking during a stakeholder session with groups including DAPPMAN, MEMAN and IPMAN.
He explained that even well-trained drivers become unsafe once under the influence of drugs, stressing that mandatory testing could help prevent recurring tanker and trailer accidents. The bill is set for second and third reading in the House.
