‘Repentant’ bandits kill district head’s grandson, abduct nine on Kaduna highway

Armed bandits described as “repentant” have killed a commercial driver, the grandson of a Birnin Gwari district head, and abducted nine others in twin attacks along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road and a nearby farming community, exposing the hollow nature of peace deals with armed groups in the area.

So much for repentance. Bandits in Kaduna State have killed a commercial driver and abducted nine other persons in two separate attacks along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road and in a village within Birnin Gwari Local Government Area.

The identity of the slain driver makes the incident even more chilling. According to Sahara Reporters,The driver, identified as Mallam Ibrahim Adamu, was the grandson of one of the District Heads of the Birnin Gwari Emirate, a relative confirmed to SaharaReporters. Ibrahim was killed at Kwanan Giginya along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari highway when armed men opened fire on his commercial vehicle, killing him on the spot and abducting about five passengers before fleeing.

The bloodshed didn’t stop there. In a separate incident, four farmers were kidnapped while working on their farms in the Kurgi area of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area — victims of gunmen who struck during routine farming activities and whisked them away to an unknown location.

The twin attacks have ripped open old wounds in a corridor that has seen repeated assaults despite government-backed peace agreements with armed groups. Residents say violence has effectively paralysed farming, economic movement and daily life in rural communities along the axis, with many incidents going unreported.

Community members also alleged that bandits routinely strip victims of motorcycles, phones and cash, beyond the killings and kidnappings that rarely make headlines.

Locals are now calling on security agencies to intensify patrols on the highway and beef up protection in vulnerable farming communities.
