Pregnant women, others killed in fresh Plateau attack

Gunmen launched a midnight raid on Ngbra Zongo community in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State on Friday, killing 13 residents, including three pregnant women, and leaving many others injured.

At least 13 people were confirmed dead and several others injured following a midnight attack by gunmen on the Ngbra Zongo community in Kwall District, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Friday, May 8, 2026. The assailants reportedly stormed the village around 12:00 a.m. while residents were asleep, firing sporadically and moving from house to house. The sudden onslaught triggered widespread panic, forcing many survivors to flee into the surrounding bushes. Local residents described the scene as a massacre, noting that the victims were defenseless civilians caught in the crossfire of the latest wave of insecurity to hit the region.

Eyewitnesses recounted the horror of the invasion, highlighting the targeted nature of the violence. Mr. Philip Alanga, a member of the community, told journalists that the attackers were systematic in their approach. “They came into the community and started shooting. They moved from one house to another attacking innocent people,” Alanga said. Further compounding the tragedy, another resident, Mr. Chigoji Rocku, revealed that the fatalities included particularly vulnerable members of the community, disclosing that three of those killed during the attack were pregnant women.

The Irigwe Development Association (IDA) has officially condemned the incident, calling on the federal and state governments to put an end to the recurring cycles of violence in Bassa and neighboring local government areas. The Secretary General of the IDA, Mr. Danjuma Auta, described the attack as tragic and urged security operatives to swiftly track down those responsible to ensure justice is served. As of press time, both the Military’s Operation Enduring Peace and the State Police Command had yet to issue a formal statement regarding the deployment of reinforcements or the pursuit of the fleeing gunmen.
