Panic as Lagos varsity locks down after bandit-like men spotted on campus

Pan-Atlantic University in Lagos ordered students to stay in their hostels Tuesday night after suspected bandits were spotted on campus, triggering a multi-agency security sweep that the university confirmed by Wednesday had found no actual threat.

Pan-Atlantic University in Lagos had a tense Tuesday night. The institution told students to stay put in their hostels after reports that bandit-like men had been spotted wandering the campus, setting off a major, multi-agency security operation.

According to P.M. News, the university’s Student Council issued an emergency advisory acknowledging the “unauthorized individuals” reports and confirming that the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Navy had all been called in to sweep the grounds. Students were told to stay within their hostels until an official all-clear came through, and were warned they might hear gunfire-like sounds — described as controlled security activity rather than any actual attack.

The university also reassured students that the heavily armed personnel visible around campus were there strictly to protect them, not to cause alarm.

By Wednesday morning, the scare was over. PAU’s Student Affairs Office confirmed that after an extensive sweep and verification process, authorities found no imminent threat to the university community, and normal academic activities, including scheduled exams, resumed as planned. Lagos State authorities also deployed surveillance drones to the area as an added security measure going forward.

It’s unclear so far whether anyone was arrested or what exactly triggered the original sighting — PAU hasn’t released further details on the circumstances behind Tuesday night’s alert.
