Nigerian MBA student at Cornell found dead in US

A Nigerian MBA student at Cornell University, Oreoluwa Odetunde, has been found dead in her off-campus residence in the United States, prompting an outpouring of grief from the university community.

A Nigerian student pursuing a Master of Business Administration at the S.C. Johnson College of Business, Oreoluwa Odetunde, has died in the United States. Odetunde, a first-year MBA student at Cornell University, was found dead in her off-campus residence on Thursday, according to a statement by the institution. She was described as an international scholar from Nigeria who was actively engaged in academic and professional activities.

According to the Cornell Daily Sun, Odetunde earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Lagos in 2017 before travelling to the United States for postgraduate studies. While at Cornell, she was involved in several student and professional groups, including the Johnson African Business Society, the Black Graduate Business Association and the Old Ezra Finance Club. She was also recognised as a Forté Fellow and Sage Scholar, distinctions awarded to high-achieving business students.

Before commencing her MBA programme, Odetunde worked in research and strategy analysis roles at Anchoria Asset Management and Greenwich Merchant Bank. In a statement posted on LinkedIn, the Cornell Johnson Graduate School mourned her death, saying, “We are devastated for Oreoluwa’s family, friends, classmates and instructors and extend our deepest condolences in this difficult time.” The university added that support meetings had been organised for members of the S.C. Johnson College community, with counselling and psychological services made available to students and staff.
