Nigeria has become an associate member of the International Energy Agency (IEA), securing a place in global energy decision-making after what the agency described as its fastest-ever accession process.
Nigeria Joins IEA
Nigeria has officially joined the International Energy Agency (IEA) as an associate member, marking a major milestone for the country’s energy sector, according to BusinessDay.
The IEA’s governing board unanimously approved Nigeria’s application weeks after it was submitted by Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo. IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol described it as the fastest membership process in the agency’s 52-year history.
The membership grants Nigeria access to the IEA’s energy data, market intelligence and policy discussions involving major economies. The agency cited Nigeria’s oil production and the Dangote Refinery’s growing impact as key factors, with Nigeria now among a few African countries in the IEA framework.
