Human rights lawyer Femi Falana is set to defend Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, who faces an eight-count charge of conspiracy, forgery and impersonation filed by the Federal Government, even as Adeyemi accuses Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila of demanding bribes for his appointment.
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) is set to defend Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi following allegations of conspiracy, forgery, impersonation and the use of forged presidential documents filed against him by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The development comes after Adeyemi accused Chief of Staff to President Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, of bribery, alleging Gbajabiamila demanded N400 million — with an outstanding balance of N200 million — to facilitate his appointment as head of a government agency. Adeyemi claimed Gbajabiamila demanded 48% of his agency’s take-off grant of N27.4 billion, and that N400 million was already paid through a proxy. He has since called for an independent panel and demanded Gbajabiamila produce all official documents signed since taking office for forensic examination.
But the Presidency isn’t taking the allegations lying down. On Wednesday, the State House mounted a robust defence of Gbajabiamila, releasing findings it says expose Adeyemi as the operator of a fictitious presidential agency — months before his corruption accusations surfaced. Records from the Office of the Chief of Staff, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and the Nigeria Police Force reportedly show Adeyemi was never appointed by Tinubu or any government authority.
Sahara Reporters reported that the Federal Government has now filed an eight-count charge against Adeyemi before the Federal High Court in Abuja, alongside two other suspects identified only as Femi and Anu, both said to be at large.
According to the charge sheet, Adeyemi allegedly conspired with the pair to forge several State House and presidential documents. Count One reads: “That you Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi Mathew ‘M’ 38 years of 2nd Floor, Federal Secretariat Complex Abuja, Femi surname unknown and Anu surname unknown now at large, on or about 8th day of March, 2024 within the Jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did conspire amongst yourselves to commit a felony to wit forgery.”
Count Two alleges Adeyemi forged a presidential appointment letter purportedly signed by Gbajabiamila on Tinubu’s behalf.
