10,430 HIV cases: Lagos figures wrongly read as new infections — NMA

Former Lagos NMA chairman, Babajide Saheed, has clarified that Lagos’ 10,430 HIV figure for 2025 reflects routine testing among existing patients rather than newly diagnosed infections.

Lagos HIV figures reflect routine testing, not new cases — NMA ex-chairman

Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Wednesday, according to Premium Times, Saheed said the figures largely represent HIV positivity from routine testing among people already on treatment, alongside newly diagnosed cases. He urged Nigerians to reference clarifications from the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).

Despite disputing the interpretation, Saheed acknowledged Lagos still bears a heavy HIV burden, calling it “a red flag.” He attributed the trend to reduced donor funding, economic hardship and treatment access challenges, urging government to boost domestic funding, decentralise treatment and intensify prevention education, particularly among young people and women.
