‘Nigeria records one suicide every 33 seconds’

An advocacy group has warned that Nigeria records up to 16,000 suicide deaths annually and called for urgent action and responsible online content to address the growing crisis.

An anti-suicide advocacy group, Suicide Is No Solution, has raised concern over Nigeria’s growing suicide crisis, claiming that about 15,000 to 16,000 deaths are recorded annually. The group’s Project Coordinator, Toye Arulogun, said the situation reflects a broader global challenge, noting that over 95,000 suicide deaths were recorded worldwide within the first two months of the year.

Arulogun condemned what he described as reckless and insensitive online content promoting self-harm, warning that such materials could worsen the crisis and damage brand reputations. He urged content creators to use their platforms to discourage self-harm and promote hope, stressing that the issue requires urgent national attention and responsible public engagement.
