NERC: Not all electricity meters are free

NERC has clarified that only government-funded DISREP electricity meters are free, while customers who cannot wait may pay under the MAP scheme.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has clarified that not all electricity meters being installed nationwide are free, amid confusion over the Federal Government’s metering programmes. Speaking during a radio chat on Saturday, NERC Chairman Musiliu Oseni said meters provided under the World Bank-funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme are free at installation, while other options remain available for customers unwilling to wait.

Oseni said, “The meter provided by the government is 100 per cent free,” stressing that DisCos are prohibited from charging customers for DISREP meters. He added that customers may still opt for the Meter Asset Provider scheme if deployment delays persist, warning consumers to verify inscriptions on free meters to avoid illegal charges.
