Nigeria’s opposition landscape shifted dramatically after Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso exited the African Democratic Congress, triggering a wave of defections to the Nigeria Democratic Congress. Within 48 hours, 17 House members and a senator joined the NDC, citing internal instability in the ADC.
Lawmakers blamed unresolved crises, noting issues persisted “from the ward to the national level.” The coordinated defections are seen as a show of loyalty to Obi and Kwankwaso, whose political influence spans key regions.
Despite the losses, ADC dismissed concerns, with its spokesman describing defectors as “idol worshippers” and insisting core party structures remain intact. Meanwhile, Senate President Godswill Akpabio mocked the situation, declaring, “I think ADC is dead.”
